Split CSV

Break a big CSV into pieces your importer accepts, or make one file per country, customer or month. Every part keeps the header row, and all parts download together as a ZIP.

How to split a CSV file

  1. Paste CSV or open a file.
  2. Choose how to split: a fixed number of rows per file (for upload limits), a number of files of equal size (for parallel work), or one file per column value (one file per region, customer or status).
  3. Check the list of parts, then download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.

Good to know

  • The header row is repeated in every part unless you untick it, so each file works on its own.
  • Splitting by column keeps rows in their original order inside each part, and the parts appear in the order their values first occur.
  • With Ignore case, "North" and "north" go to the same file, named after the first spelling seen.
  • Going the other way? Merge CSV files stacks the parts back together.

Frequently asked questions

Does splitting change my data?

No. Rows are written out again with the original delimiter and line endings, and quotes are added only where a value needs them, so commas and line breaks inside cells stay intact.

How are the files named when splitting by a column?

Each file is named after its value, with characters that are not allowed in file names replaced, for example orders-United Kingdom.csv. Empty values go to a file called empty, and names that would clash get a number added.

Is there a limit on the number of parts?

Splitting by a column with thousands of distinct values works, but it produces thousands of files. The tool warns you above 1,000 parts so you can check the column first.
